S-in motion: A lifetime of savings

S-in motion is a new concept from ArcelorMittal for car makers who wish to create lighter, safer and more environmentally friendly vehicles. The project demonstrates ArcelorMittal’s ongoing commitment to the automotive sector with a catalogue of steel parts and solutions that can be implemented in production vehicles today.

A life cycle assessment (LCA) showed that the use of ultra high strength steels (UHSS) in a typical C-class vehicle, equipped with all S-in motion solutions, would result in a: 

• 14.5% saving in emissions over the vehicle’s entire life
• 15% reduction in CO₂-equivalent emissions during the production
• 13.5% reduction in CO₂-eq emissions during the use phase
• Recycling benefits at the end-of-life phase
• Decrease of 6.2 grams CO₂/kilometre during the use phase

With S-in motion solutions onboard, emissions are reduced by 14.5% over the vehicle’s life
