    Safe, strong and sustainable

Key facts and figures

S-in motion is the culmination of a two-year design study to demonstrate the additional weight that can be removed from a modern 5-door C-segment vehicle body-in-white through the innovative application of the full range of ArcelorMittal’s current automotive steel grades.

The S-in motion catalogue offers multiple solutions for 43 key parts in the front, side, and rear body structure modules, plus additional solutions for hang-on (doors) and chassis parts. Separate baselines and separate solutions are provided to reflect the unique requirements of some European and U.S. regulations.

Together, the lightest solutions reduce the weight of the body-in-white plus closures by 57 kg or 14 percent and the lightest chassis solutions reduce weight by 16 kg or 22 percent. Longer-term, breakthrough products currently under development at ArcelorMittal have the potential to remove an additional 29 kg of weight from the vehicle.

Together, the lightest solutions reduce the CO2 emissions by 6.23 g/km during the vehicle use phase and provide a 14 percent overall total life cycle CO2 reduction.

All solutions in the catalogue have been validated for forming and joining feasibility and use steels that are either already in commercial application at one or more automaker around the world, or will be fully commercialized well before the solution could be implemented in a next-generation vehicle.
