ArcelorMittal's large R&D team does just that, working in close collaboration with customers, often in co-engineering programmes, devising new steels and design solutions that improve the competitiveness of their products. Our Group seeks to develop high-value and strategic niche products to increase our market share, especially against competing materials. But we also have a parallel goal - to meet the wider demands of society for a lower carbon dioxide world. In 2008 alone, some 40 new products and numerous design solutions were commercialised - a new record. The R&D team is working on a large number of breakthrough projects; some still at the exploratory stage, others are a year or two away from commercialisation.
