On November 26, 2008 ArcelorMittal Juiz de Fora, in Brazil, received the 'Mineiro' Award for Environmental Management (Prêmio Mineiro de Gestão Ambiental).
This award recognises the excellence of environmental management at the Juiz de Fora unit. It re-circulates 99% of the water used in its industrial processes, uses charcoal – a sustainable energy source – for pig iron production and undertakes a number of valued social and environmental projects within the local community.
This is the 3rd time the award has been presented and the 2nd time which ArcelorMittal has been honored. In 2006, ArcelorMittal Monlevade was the proud recipient.
The award was presented by Minas Gerais State Governor Aécio Neves to the CEO Long Carbon South and Central America, Paulo Geraldo de Sousa, to the Industrial Director, Gérson Menezes, and to the General Unit Manager, Tarcísio Bomtempo Martins.
The ceremony took place during the opening of the conference Diálogos da Terra no Planeta Água (Dialogues from the Earth on the Water Planet) held in Belo Horizonte in front of an audience of 1,500 guests.
