We currently operate 29 mining projects and in 2012 we produced 55.9 million tonnes of iron ore and 8.2 million tonnes of coal
ArcelorMittal mines iron ore and metallurgical coal. Iron ore is the primary raw material in steelmaking and coal is used as fuel to melt the ore. We are building greater self-sufficiency in raw material production and diversified external markets for our iron ore and coal. Our goal is to produce 84 million tonnes of iron ore by 2015.
We currently operate 29 mining projects and in 2012 we produced 55.9 million tonnes of iron ore and 8.2 million tonnes of coal. In addition, we have developed a greenfield iron ore project in Liberia, from where the first shipment of ore was made in September 2011. We expect to produce 4 million tonnes of iron ore a year in Liberia by 2012.
Our acquisition of Baffinland Iron Ore Mines, in partnership with Nunavut Iron Ore, has consolidated our position as a major iron ore producer. As part of this project, we will develop a mine in Nunavut, a territory in the Canadian Arctic.
