ArcelorMittal Coatesville earns ISO 14001 certification
COATESVILLE, December 13, 2007 – ArcelorMittal Coatesville, a Pennsylvania Flat Carbon facility, is the first in a batch of recently acquired ArcelorMittal USA facilities to receive an ISO 14001 environmental management system certification by SRI Quality System Registrar.
Today, Shelby Pixley, chief executive officer of ArcelorMittal USA Plate, and Keith Nagel, director of environment and real estate for ArcelorMittal USA, will visit the Coatesville facility to recognize General Manager Edward Frey and the entire Coatesville team for maintaining superior environmental compliance and continuous improvement to advance the company’s objectives and lead the way on environmental stewardship.
“I am thrilled with the leadership that the Coatesville team showed by not only successfully meeting all criteria required to be certified under the ISO 14001 environmental standard, but by being the first in a new crop of ArcelorMittal facilities to do so,” said Frey. “This was a team effort and will require active ongoing collaboration to improve and sustain our certification.”
ISO 14001 was established as an internationally recognized standard to which organizations could obtain certification and thereby acknowledge an effective environmental management system (EMS). An EMS can stand alone, or be integrated with other management systems. When a company has implemented an effective EMS, it shows top management’s commitment to good environmental practices, conservation of input materials and energy, attainment of necessary permits and authorizations, as well as their intent to maintain good public/community relations.
SRI Quality System Registrar is an internationally accredited registrar for quality management systems standards, such as ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO/TS 16949, and environmental management systems standards such as ISO 14001. SRI also provides public training for auditing, implementing and maintaining these standards.
“We are pleased to acknowledge that ArcelorMittal Coatesville has demonstrated the effective implementation of an environmental management system,” said A. Joseph Falcsik, SRI Vice President, Certification. “ISO 14001 certification provides evidence of ArcelorMittal Coatesville’s commitment to meeting its environmental responsibilities to customers, suppliers, employees and nearby communities.”
Keith Nagel, director of environment and real estate for ArcelorMittal USA, added: “ArcelorMittal is committed to transforming tomorrow through its brand values of sustainability, quality and leadership. By implementing the ISO 14000 environmental management system at our facilities, ArcelorMittal USA is reinforcing its commitment to improving the environmental management and performance of the USA organization, including pollution prevention, resource conservation and environmental risk.”
To date, 10 ArcelorMittal USA facilities are ISO 14001 certified with five additional facilities, including ArcelorMittal Conshohocken and Steelton, receiving certification by year end. The three remaining ArcelorMittal USA facilities will be certified in 2008.
