Georgetown
Georgetown is an electric furnace and wire rod facility. It is strategically located on a deepwater seaport along the Sampit River in Georgetown, S.C. The area allows for good shipping access through the seaport, as well as excellent highway and railroad shipping.
The plant operates two electric arc furnaces and is capable of producing 1 million tons of liquid steel annually and 750,000 tons of wire rod. The Georgetown facility has stood on its site since 1969. Wire rod is made at this location. Markets the facility serves include construction, automotive, industrial and converters.
Examples of Environmental Excellence
Voluntarily meeting standards
In 2008, ArcelorMittal Georgetown received ISO 14001 certification as a demonstration of its commitment to environmental excellence. An internationally recognized standard, ISO 14001 is not required for U.S. manufacturers. Instead, organizations adhere to it voluntarily by working to obtain certification, therefore acknowledging an effective environmental management system (EMS).
A valid EMS involves superior compliance and adherence to independent standards regulating water and air emissions. To receive certification, ArcelorMittal Georgetown implemented an effective EMS, demonstrated top management’s commitment to effective environmental procedures, encouraged conservation of input materials and energy, maintain necessary permits and authorizations, and expressed intent to establish good communication with stakeholders including communities.
