Steelton

ArcelorMittal Steelton is a steel-making facility located along the Susquehanna River in Steelton, Pa. just south of Harrisburg.  The location provides fast and economical access to customers through an excellent shipping network of highways and railroads.  The plant produces railroad rails, specialty blooms, forging-quality ingots and special quality bars for use in the railroad industry, forging and industrial markets.  It is one of only two rail producers in the United States.  In operation since 1867, the plant was formerly part of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The Steelton plant covers nearly 380 acres of land and has approximately 625 employees.

Examples of Environmental Excellence

Cleaning House

While we usually think of superior environmental performance as encompassing major efforts such as wastewater treatment and reduction of emissions, it also includes the little things, like good housekeeping within the facility.  With this in mind, Steelton hosted its first “Day of Housekeeping” in the fall of 2007. Each employee spent about a half an hour picking up trash, pulling weeds or organizing an area.  When you realize that it can take two to five months for paper to decay, 12 years for a cigarette butt to disintegrate, 500 years for a can and a million years for a plastic container to decay, the environmental benefits of the plant-wide cleanup are substantial, and the cost was minimal.
