ArcelorMittal Cleveland earns ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification
CLEVELAND, February 7, 2008 – ArcelorMittal Cleveland has recently been awarded ISO 14001 environmental management system certification by SRI Quality System Registrar. The certification is for the management of environmental aspects related to the manufacture and supply of hot-rolled, cold-rolled full-hard, cold-rolled full-finished, hot dip-galvanized sheet and semi-finished (slabs) steel.
“ArcelorMittal is committed to transforming tomorrow through its brand values of sustainability, quality and leadership,” said Keith Nagel, director of environment and real estate for ArcelorMittal USA. “By implementing the ISO 14001 environmental management system at our facilities, ArcelorMittal USA is reinforcing its commitment to improving the environmental management and performance of the USA organization, including pollution prevention, resource conservation and environmental risk.”
Nagel applauds General Manager Terry G. Fedor and the entire Cleveland team for maintaining superior environmental compliance and continuous improvement to advance the company’s objectives and lead the way on environmental stewardship. The Cleveland facility is also recognized as the most efficient integrated steel mill in the world, based on worker hours per ton of steel produced.
“We are pleased to acknowledge that ArcelorMittal Cleveland has demonstrated the effective implementation of an environmental management system,” said A. Joseph Falcsik, SRI vice president, certification. “ISO 14001 certification provides evidence to customers, suppliers, employees and to nearby communities of the commitment by ArcelorMittal Cleveland to meeting its environmental responsibilities.”
ISO 14001 was established as an internationally recognized standard to which organizations could obtain certification and thereby acknowledge an effective environmental management system (EMS). An EMS can stand alone, or be integrated with other management systems. When a company has implemented an effective EMS, it shows top management’s commitment to good environmental practices, conservation of input materials and energy, attainment of necessary permits and authorizations, as well as their intent to maintain good public/community relations.
SRI Quality System Registrar is an internationally accredited registrar for quality management systems standards, such as ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO/TS 16949 and environmental management systems standards such as ISO 14001. SRI also provides public training for auditing, implementing and maintaining these standards.
Cleveland joins a group of six facilities to recently become ISO 14001 certified. In total, 16 ArcelorMittal USA operating facilities are ISO 14001 certified. The remaining facilities will be certified by year end.
