ArcelorMittal Cleveland erects test tower for wind power

CLEVELAND, February 12, 2008 – ArcelorMittal Cleveland has installed a meteorological testing tower to determine the potential for generating electricity with wind-driven turbines on its property on the eastern rim of the Cuyahoga River Valley.

The feasibility for wind power at the Cleveland site will be determined over the next 12 months. Instruments at three levels on the tower will record wind patterns, speed, prevailing direction and strength, among other factors. The 197-foot-high tower will be dismantled after sufficient information is gathered.

“We have a serious commitment to sustainability, as demonstrated by our search for solutions like renewable energy from wind power that are good for the environment and make business sense,” said Keith Nagel, director of environmental affairs and real estate for ArcelorMittal USA.

ArcelorMittal USA is a partner in one of the largest wind farms in the eastern United States in Lackawanna, N.Y., on the Lake Erie shore south of Buffalo. Ten wind turbines at that site each generate 2.5 megawatts of power, which combined can power 6,000 to 7,000 homes annually.

In Cleveland, crews from EnviroPlan Consulting of Fairfield, N.J., erected, assembled and tested the meteorological testing tower. With the rise of land above the river valley, the top of the tower is almost 300 feet above the level of the lake and river.

The tower is anchored by 28 guy wires and sits on ArcelorMittal property about 3/4-mile west of Interstate 77 and 3/4 mile north of Harvard Avenue. It is difficult to see because of its distance from public streets and because of its narrow shape. The tower is only eight inches in diameter at its base and only 4.5 inches in diameter at the top.

But the tower has three sets of important instruments, one at the top and others at 131 and 164 feet, respectively. The testing will determine not only if wind turbines would be feasible but also what types of turbines would be appropriate.

ArcelorMittal is also exploring the opportunity for another wind farm at its Indiana Harbor facility in East Chicago, Ind.
