S-in motion: A catalogue of solutions

The S-in motion catalogue currently includes multiple solutions for 43 parts of a typical C-segment vehicle. For most of the parts, more than one solution has been identified. The resulting catalogue has over 60 solutions which utilise a range of:

  • Press hardened steels (PHS) amounting to 25% of the BIW and crash management system (CMS)
  • Advanced high strength steels (AHSS) account for around 29% of the BIW and CMS
  • Stainless steel (typically 17.7C-1.4310 for the A-pillar lower outer)
  • Long products (such as forged SOLAMB1100 for the steering knuckle)

Catalogue of savings

Manufacturers who implement the lightest solution for each part could save up to:

  • 73 kg or 19% of the typical vehicle’s weight based on a comparison with a baseline C-segment production vehicle
  • 19% of the BIW weight using the lightest solution
  • 16 kg (22%) of the chassis weight
