Objectives
- To develop and complete the high strength and ultra high strength steels offer (DP, TRIP, multiphased, hot stamped materials etc.)
- To support and facilitate the introduction and use of ultra high strength steels by improving In-Use Properties (fatigue, bending, cut edges, toughness, weldability, H2 measurements etc.)
- To develop coatings with high anti-corrosive properties for hot stamped materials
- To contribute to the building, development and renewal of the ArcelorMittal portfolio
Product developments and Improvement of In-Use Properties
"Product developments" and "Improvement of In-Use Properties" (IUP) programs have been structured to answer to these questions. Development of new products systematically requires input from metallurgical, coating and In-Use Properties technical domains. This also ensures efficient developments in accordance with our clients' needs and with the highest quality management requirements.
The following competences are present in the MBIWS research group:
- Metallurgical and coating expertise and coating simulation facilities: melt elaboration, hot and cold rolling, continuous and batch annealing, metallurgical table simulator, skin pass, Rhesca simulators (Hot Dip Galvanised device), hot stamping facilities, metallography, annealing under controlled atmosphere
- Competences dedicated to the assessment and the improvement of In-Use Properties for UHSS valorisation: fatigue facilities, new bending tests, cut edges improvement, weldability diagnosis, H2 measurements and expertise for delayed fracture
In-Use Properties teams are very close to clients' objectives as weight lightening, environmental concerns, safety through experimental and modelling studies for stamping, cutting, welding and fatigue.
Connections are well established with other research groups:
- Breakthrough as a source for new developments
- Customer Service for products in early industrialisation phase
- Corrosion for compatibility of developed grades with new coatings
