Employees of ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek acquired CZK 50 thousand for non-profit organizations

Ostrava, May 18, 2010 – representatives of 8 non-profit organizations of the Moravian-Silesian region acquired cheques for support of public beneficial projects from ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek some days ago. Applications for grants were submitted to the selection procedure by employees of the rolling mills, who directly cooperate with these non-profit organizations. “Based on volunteer activities organized by our company we found out that many of our employees help in some of non-profit organizations. We wanted to support their activities, which are beneficial and unbelievably human, and therefore we announced the mini-grants´ project,“ explains Mr. Rostislav Tkáč, HR director.

In the beginning of this year the company announced grant procedure of Mini-grants´ project. During 3 months employees had the opportunity to ask for support for specific project of a non-profit organization, with which they have a long-term cooperation and to which they provide active help. “All 8 projects, which were assessed by the commission, were so interesting that the commission took decision to provide CZK 50 thousand to all of them. ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek set this sum apart for the first round of mini-grants,“ says Monika Supíková from communications dept.

One of those, who received support for their projects, was also Antonín Šlachta, who practices with his retriever called Zuzanka the so-called therapy dog in secondary, elementary and nursery school of speech therapy located in Frýdek-Místek. “This activity is of great importance for our children. Therapy dog is very useful for children with huge or small handicap because contact with dog is extremely beneficial for their acquisition of self-confidence. Children love Zuzanka, they take the dog for walk and sometime this is really touching,“ says Ilja Maloušková, headmaster of the school, about cooperation with Antonín Šlachta. According to her this is also thanks to the fact that the company enables Mr. Šlachta to carry out therapy dog also during the day. “Naturally I must work overtime to compensate the time spent with the children, however, it is great that we can come with Zuzanka and meet children also at the time, which suits their program,“ adds Šlachta.

Petr Vitula received CZK 10 thousand for the Basic unit of the Association of beekeepers for the purpose of educating of new members. “At present the age of beekeepers is high. Nevertheless bee is completely indispensable for environment. This is the reasons why I devote my leisure time to educating of children interested in beekeeping; I founded two bees units for which we need further equipment. I am happy that the company supported this extremely important environmental activity,“ appreciates Vitula.

ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek shall organize selection procedures for assignment of mini-grants always twice a year, e.g. in the second half of the year the commission shall select further projects. “We are looking forward to the next round, as we are happy to help our employees, who provide help where it is needed because their roller´s heart is at the right spot,“ promised the HR director upon handing over of cheques.

Organization of the festivities´ day called “Children´s day with RAINMAN“ for physically handicapped children in Bojnice, Slovakia, with diagnosis of autism (RAIN MAN, civil association of parents and friends of children suffering from autism, Ostrava – Svinov) CZK 10 000
Environmental education of youth and purchasing of beekeeping equipment for practical knowledge of youth upon this specialized education (ZO ČSV Dobrá /Basic unit of the of the Association of beekeepers of the Czech Republic, civil association/- Základní organizace, Český svaz včelařů Dobrá, občanské sdružení) CZK 10 000
Equipment of common lounge and providing immediate help to children aged 3 -18 years, who cannot further stay in their families because of unfavorable situations (Civil association Heřmánek, Karviná - Staré Město) CZK 5 000
Refurbishing of school greenhouse used for education, leisure activities, after school club activities and others focused on environmental education of children – production and installation of airing windows for the greenhouse (Elementary school and nursery school of Raškovice) CZK 5 000
Tuition and physiotherapy of pupils with autism by means of therapy dog, during which therapeutic contact between the assistance dog and the human is used (Secondary school, Elementary school and Nursery school dealing with speech therapy, allowance organization, Frýdek-Místek) CZK 5 000

ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek (formerly called Válcovny plechu Frýdek-Místek) is subsidiary of ArcelorMittal Ostrava. This company is a significant producer of cold rolled steels. Production range consists of deep-drawing steel, electrical steels, zinc-coated earthing strips and wire. After having merged with Nová Huť – Válcovna za studena /Cold rolling mills/ the production range also includes carbon and micro-alloyed steels and steel binding strips. The company exports most of its electrical steels, especially to Europe, e.g. Italy, Turkey and Germany. In 2008 the company profit was CZK 600.32 mil. (before taxation), which is by 13 percent higher than in the previous year. Revenues from sales of products and services increased in 2008 to CZK 3.9 billion, while in 2007 these revenues were CZK 3.5 billion.

At present the company, together with subsidiaries, has 894 employees. In 2008 their average salary was CZK 24 787.
