Member of Supplier Staff Dies in Transit to Hospital

Frýdek-Místek, June 17, 2008 – A 54-year old member of staff of Hard Construction, a supplier company, was found suffering a serious health condition at ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek premises shortly before 4 p.m. yesterday. Emergency service was called immediately and the man was flown by a helicopter to Ostrava-Poruba hospital. He died in transit. Police investigation of the causes is underway.

“Staff safety is undisputed priority across the ArcelorMittal Group. The rolling mill boasts 388 consecutive days without accidents leading to inability to work thanks to consequent implementation of safety measures,” comments Tomáš Mischinger, managing director of ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek. The man was not member of staff of ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek; he worked for one of the suppliers. Cause of the death has not been identified as of now.

ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek is member of ArcelorMittal Ostrava, Czech Republic’s largest steel company. Last year was closed with audited pre-tax profit of 530.5m CZK, a year-on-year plus of 28 %. Profit after tax reached 416m CZK last year. Earnings from the sales of products and services grew to 3.5bn CZK from 3.17bn CZK the year before. Company performance in added value terms grew 131m CZK year on year reaching 866m CZK.

ArcelorMittal, a. s., is Czech Republic’s largest steel company and member of the worldwide number one steel-making group. Major shareholders of former Nová huť include MITTAL STEEL HOLDINGS A. G. (71.6 %), and Czech government (represented by the treasury department and the Czech Consolidation Agency). ArcelorMittal has 7,450 employees or 10,300 employees with subsidiaries. The output reached 3.1 tonnes of steel in 2006 with 59 % sold to customers in 88 countries of the world in 2006 (1 March 2006 - 28 February 2007). Total earnings were 59bn CZK and profit reached 9.6bn CZK. ArcelorMittal is among Czech Republic’s major taxpayers.
