Steel Rollers in Frýdek-Místek Invest and Increase Production

Frýdek-Místek, Nov 24, 2008 – Today the company ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek commissioned new lines for GO steel production. Thanks to the total investments of CZK 2.5 billion the volume of electric sheets production is going to more than double existing production rate of 22 thousand per year. „In the year 2009 our capacity is going to reach 46 600 tons and in the following year we are planning rapid increase up to 75 thousand tons. We are also going to improve our products quality significantly“, says the company director Mr. Tomáš Mischinger.

The first part of the investment project contained five covered electric furnaces for high temperature annealing of coils supplied by the German company Loi. Our existing production capacity has been increased by 20 thousand tons. We also installed a new thermal straightening line Ingetaem and a coating line supplied by an Italian company Tenova. “In the course of the year 2008 we have invested some CZK 650 thousand in these facilities”, comments Mr. Mischinger. We are also going to reconstruct our decarburizing line.

Installation of the new decarburizing line is going to be the second stage of the project. This facility will allow producing of top quality transformer plates in the following years. We are going to add two high temperature annealing furnaces and a slitting line and a packing center that is going to bring us more orders for higher quality strips. We are also going to reconstruct and modernize parts of our rolling stand in order to be able to roll high quality thin sheets.

Besides investments in the production equipment the production increase brought necessary investments in the waste processing system. Our company is investing some CZK 60 million in wastewater treatment in order to mitigate environmental impacts. The steel rollers in Frýdek-Místek invested also in the switch station to provide for increased power input for the newly installed lines.

At the moment there are 13 producers of transformer sheets in the world. In Europe there are just a few steel companies able to produce this demanding product, they are in Poland, Germany, Russia and Great Britain. “Increasing of our production capacity and higher quality of sheets will allow us to address more demanding customers manufacturing more effective transformers. We are expecting higher exports to Turkey, India, Italy and USA“, concludes Tomáš Mischinger.

ArcelorMittal Frýdek-Místek belongs to the biggest Czech steel group ArcelorMittal Ostrava. In the year 2008 the company generated profit of CZK 530.5 million (before taxation) which represented year-to-year growth by 28%. The profit after taxation was CZK 416 million.
