Steel, a bestseller for automotive applications
ArcelorMittal Gent offers a wide variety of steels and coatings to support its customers from the automotive sector in the design and production of bodyworks and equipment that meet the expectations of an ever more demanding clientele.

Most automobile manufacturers now use galvanised products, for both exposed and non-exposed parts. The use of galvanised steel strip in the automotive sector must guarantee the necessary corrosion resistance. Today, corrosion resistance can be guaranteed from 10 to 12 years.
Modern automobile structures are innovative and energy-saving. The development of new and stronger steel grades has helped to significantly reduce the total weight of a car.
The sometimes contradictory requirements of reduced weight and higher safety and better performances of the bodywork can be met via laser-welded blanks. Instead of steel strip, ArcelorMittal Gent delivers already-completed auto parts, in cooperation with ArcelorMittal Tailored Blanks Gent. Of course, these parts have to meet very strict safety regulations. Laser-welded blanks create possibilities for cost reduction, weight savings and technical improvements, including (for example) increased crash resistance. The structural behaviour of the cars is also improved, which is favourable for the road-holding ability.
A large share of the hot rolled steel is destined for producers of wheels for cars and trucks. This is high-quality steel that imposes strict requirements on the production process. A steel company like ours that makes this type of material thus decides at the same time to raise its entire production process to a higher quality level.

Traditionally, deep-drawing and structural steels were used for the production of wheels. Now high-strength steels are being developed with a view to lighter wheels, better mouldability and higher fatigue resistance.
