Policy and Management

Policy into practice

A new Group-wide Environmental Policy was an early priority after the merger, and was published in July 2007. The policy focuses on ten key principles, and covers every aspect of our operations, from mining to steel making to distribution.

Its practical application is based on ISO 14001, the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems. It's based on regular and independent performance audits, which are reported back to the ArcelorMittal Board four times a year.

All ArcelorMittal production plants must now be certified to the ISO 14001 standard. 91 percent had achieved it by the end of 2008, and the rest are expected to do so by the end of 2010. Some of our non-production sites have also achieved certification, or are aiming for it.

As part of the same process we've carried out a comprehensive review of all our environmental impacts across the Group, so that we can measure performance consistently, share best practice, and set appropriate and ambitious overall targets. Our new 'Ops Environmental' database now monitors air, water, energy and waste data from facilities worldwide. These are key areas for ongoing improvement, alongside our efforts to combat climate change.

We've also developed an information exchange tool on the company's intranet, specially designed to keep our environmental managers across the world up-to-date on regulatory changes, emerging technologies and processes, biodiversity management and the latest research studies.
