Less waste, more recycling
Landfill waste is a growing problem worldwide. We've been making increasing efforts to reduce the waste we produce, or find other uses for it.
We have more progress to make on our waste reporting, but we estimate that in 2006, 80 percent of our total waste was recycled, either inside or outside the business, and we produced 113.6 kg of landfill or incinerated waste per tonne of steel. Of this, we are storing 80 kg, in the hope that we can either recycle or find other industry partners who can re-use it. For example, steel-making slag can be re-used in road building and embankments, and blast furnace slag can be employed in cement production, which also avoids large-scale CO2 emissions.
