Corporate governance

Our approach to corporate governance

We go far beyond the formal requirements of our international listings, in areas such as the way we interact with our shareholders, the genuine independence of our board, and the standards of behaviour we ask of all our people, at every level.

The quality and transparency of our disclosures is a particular priority, and one that we believe to be absolutely fundamental. We've commissioned various Investor Relations surveys to assess how well we live up to our own high ambitions in this area, which we're now incorporating into our key performance indicators.

Investor Relations

In 2007, our investor relations programme was ranked third among 51 metals and mining companies by sell-side analysts and first by buy-side analysts, in a study by the Institutional Investor Research Group. As the results are broken down into categories, we can see where we need to improve, and where we already lead the field. For example, we scored highly for the level of access we offer to senior management, and in the quality of information we provide. On the other hand we need to respond more quickly to queries, and upgrade our website. Work is underway in both of these areas.

We aim to be one of the top ten companies in this survey every year, and will take part in others over time. As part of this, we launched a new 'shareholder partnership' programme in May 2008. This involves a small sample of our largest investors who'll be giving us regular feedback on our financial and industrial performance, and our strategic direction.

We also talk to our major investors about our corporate responsibility work, which is of particular interest to Socially Responsible Investment funds, or SRIs. For example, we presented on 'Corporate Responsibility for Growth and Reduced Risk' in New York in April 2008.
