Human rights
Where we stand on human rights
ArcelorMittal supports the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Core Conventions of the International Labour Organisation (or ILO) and the United Nations Global Compact.
A commitment to human rights is also one of our corporate responsibility objectives. In our business we sometimes have to deal with situations that raise particular human rights challenges, especially when we're planning greenfield developments, or major new excavations.
In some cases, for example, we're forced to re-settle people, even though this is always a last resort. If it's genuinely unavoidable, we work hard to observe a fair and open process, obey the best international standards, and respect local cultural and social issues. We work with local groups, and actively involve all the affected stakeholders in planning for their new communities, and developing the jobs and amenities they will need.
Because human rights is such a sensitive and important area for us we have an ongoing programme of training and communications, backed up by practical tool-kits and specialist support from corporate headquarters.
