S-in motion

S-in motionIn a constant effort to support its automotive customers needs, ArcelorMittal is proud to announce its latest R&D project, S-in motion.

Making use of its experience in advanced high strength steels, the S-in motion project aims to provide automotive steel solutions that address vehicle mass and cost performance ratios while maintaining vehicle safety.

ArcelorMittal Body ConceptThe new S-in motion project follows in the footsteps of ABC (ArcelorMittal Body Concept), the already successful body-in-white (BIW) demonstrator project, which was launched at the 2004 EuroCarBody conference.

Subsequent to the ABC project, ArcelorMittal went on to adapt the demonstrator project to the specific needs of its clients through a series of steel solutions catalogues developed with recognized leaders in the automotive industry.

S-in motion Project

With the deadline of 2010, S-in motion will go beyond ABC and the module catalogues with all new steel solutions for the body-in-white, chassis and wheels.

Based on a 2008 vehicle benchmark, the project will incorporate additional material options and new forming and joining technologies, with a new ambitious weight reduction target of 20%.

Additionally, with the S-in motion project, ArcelorMittal will not only partner with carmakers in their pursuit to decrease fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, but it will also address product life cycle management issues that can impact automotive business expansion and growth.

ABC Project

The ABC project focused on four vehicle sub-assemblies which are critical to impact resistance and make up 63% of the body in white and door elements. Through the use of high performance steel ABC achieved a 20% weight reduction.

Steel Solutions Catalogue

The aim of these catalogues was to design various steel solutions for individual sub-assemblies of the body-in-white and chassis that would offer different possibilities in terms of weight savings, performance and cost results associated with specific forming processes.

In coordination with automotive customers, the various solutions have been adapted to new vehicles projects and manufacturing processes, which offer the best cost-safety benefit.

One very impressive example is the Front Bumper Catalogue.
