As society makes determined moves towards sustainability, construction has a very important role to play - not only because of its economic, social and environmental contribution, but also because of its impact on our quality of lives.
While the construction industry employs over 111 million people (ILO:2008), it also accounts for 40% of global energy consumption (WBCSD:2008). In the United States alone, buildings account for 38% of CO2 emissions, 40% of raw material use, 30% of waste output and 14% of water consumption (US Green Buildings Council:2007).
The global challenge for the construction industry is to meet the world's growing need for buildings, while at the same time limiting the environmental impact of construction. In fact, reducing buildings' consumption of natural resources and associated emissions is seen as crucial for future sustainability (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:2004).
