Supporting development in post-war Liberia
Today's challenge
The Republic of Liberia, a country on the west coast of Africa, is home to around 3.5 million people. Rich in iron ore, gold, diamonds and forestry resources but devastated by two civil wars between 1989 and 2003, the country's economy and infrastructure had been destroyed.
Project Radio: Community engagement in India
Today's challenge
Our plans to build two steel plants in India, has provided us with a very high-profile test of our commitment to corporate responsibility. One of the Greenfield sites chosen, in Jharkhand, is in the process of rapid industrialisation but continues to have a largely agrarian population.
Providing steel solutions for Habitat for Humanity
Today's challenge
Access to adequate shelter is vital to every human being, yet over 1.1 billion people are living in inadequate housing conditions. One in four households live in poverty and over 100 million people worldwide are homeless. In fact, an estimated 21 million new housing units are required each year to accommodate the growth in the number of households (source: United Nations Centre for Human Settlements, UNCHS). The need for housing is clear; however, finding affordable solutions to this issue is not so clear.
'Dear Neighbours': ArcelorMittal's community engagement plan in Belgium
Today's challenge
Heavy industry or manufacturing can raise concerns for environmental protection. Steelmaking creates CO2, dust and noise pollution, which can negatively affect the surrounding communities. However, working with neighbouring communities to minimize any negative impact, can help improve the trust between the company and its community.
Building stronger links with our communities in the Americas
Today's challenge
After any major merger there will always be efforts to integrate and re-align the businesses from the two parent companies. New ways of working are adopted and, in this case, new approaches to community engagement. Before our merger all our North American sites had slightly different approaches to community involvement, which reflected their particular local circumstances.
Giving steel new appeal for students in Dunkerque
Today's challenge
For the last 12 years our plants in the Dunkerque area have been running an educational programme with local schools. The initial aim was to supplement science lessons with a case study on how steel is made, and give students more insight into the possibilities of working in our sector.
The project was a great success from the start, but by 2007 we felt there was the potential to do a lot more with the scheme.
Open house for local stakeholders in Belgium
Today's challenge
Sustainability is one of ArcelorMittal's core values, and we're striving to make this a fundamental part of everything we do, and integral to our whole approach to business. In practice this means finding the right balance between long-term profitability, and our wider social and environmental responsibilities.
