ArcelorMittal Zenica

Iron and Steel Works Zenica was established in 1892 by a group of Austrian industrials. At the very beginning of its operation, it was a centre of the first big European industrial wave that covered the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Along with the millennial tradition of steel production in this area, the choice for its location was made on the basis of natural benefits, namely the central position of Zenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the large energy coal deposits in Zenica and surroundings areas, the vicinity of the iron ore mines, and the availability of communication lines along the valley of the river Bosnia.

The first plants built were two puddling furnaces, three rolling mills, and a generator and boiler plant. The increase of capital and profits enabled additional constructions and modernization of the facilities, this has been maintained throughout its history.

In 1988 the steel factory reached its top by producing 1,906,000 tonnes of crude steel.

The 1992 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina stopped development of the factory, some plants were shut down and restarted only recently. In July 2008, ArcelorMittal Zenica completed one of the most challenging projects in steelmaking industry - the restart of integral rout after almost seventeen years of closure. The project which cost over US$120 million, was called "Fenix" (Phoenix), just as the phoenix rising from its own ashes.

Today ArcelorMittal Zenica arranges its production in the coke plant, sinter plant, blast furnace, BOF Plant, rolling mills, forge plant, power plant, transportation and central service.

Current capacity of the production is 1 million tons per year.

ArcelorMittal Zenica employs over 3,000 employees.
