Port-Cartier, Quebec, January 14th, 2008 — The Québec Cartier Mining Company today awarded Captain Jerzy Tarasiewicz, commander of the MV Alam Permai, the traditional iron-headed cane for being the first transatlantic ore carrier to sail into the Company’s harbour in 2008.
The MV Alam Permai, built in 2005 and flying the Republic of Singapore flag, docked at 8:00 p.m. on January 13th. The vessel, which has a capacity of 87,000 deadweight tonnes and carries a crew of 23, is heading back out to sea today after taking on 80,000 tonnes of iron pellets for the European market. It will take about ten days to reach its destination across the Atlantic Ocean.

In 2007, the Québec Cartier port received 507 ships and transhipped over 20 million tonnes of iron-ore concentrate and pellets as well as grain for shipment to customers in America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
