Sustainable Development
ArcelorMittal Mines Canada is firmly committed to minimizing the environmental
repercussions of developing mineral resources, while building a prosperous company that
assumes its full responsibility in the communities where it operates.
That commitment takes practical form each and every day as social, economic and environmental
considerations are incorporated into the Company’s decision-making process. It is also reflected in the Company’s respect for the
interests of communities, individuals or groups that may be affected by its activities.

Sustainable Development Policy
ArcelorMittal Mines Canada is committed to maintaining its international
leadership position and competitiveness, and is therefore a strong advocate of
Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM), a Mining Association of Canada (MAC) initiative.
ArcelorMittal Mines Canada is proud to apply TSM guiding principles. Recognizing the growing
environmental, social and economic concerns we all face, ArcelorMittal Mines Canada has
identified specific goals, based on a continuous improvement approach, to guide its
sustainable development activities. These goals are to:
Implement management and operating practices that contribute to economic and
social development, while minimizing the environmental impact of Company
activities and meeting legal requirements as well as other Company commitments.
Implement a corporate Environmental Management System in line with ISO 14001.
Actively communicate and cooperate with governments, the public and
communities of interest to foster the sustainable development of ArcelorMittal Mines Canada,
its partners and its environment.
Reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions by making efficient use of the
energy needed for Company activities, and reducing the use of products that have
an environmental impact.
Cooperate with the Company’s goods and services suppliers to ensure ever-greater
integration of social and environmental considerations into their business practices.
Maintain an approach based on best practices in mine tailings management.
Maintain a corporate crisis management and communication plan to protect the
Company’s assets.
ArcelorMittal Mines Canada’s commitment to sustainable development is based on five fundamental principles.
Health and Safety
ArcelorMittal Mines Canada sets health and safety above all other priorities, for the entire Company.
A strong safety culture is instilled at every level and is supported by stringent safety standards and a
performance monitoring system aimed at reducing accident levels year after year.
Profitability
A healthy financial return is essential to the Company’s long-term growth and stability.
Thus, by providing top-quality competitive products, maximizing earnings and reducing operating costs,
the Company not only ensures that its shareholders’ equity grow but also continues investing and contributing
to the economic and social development of the communities where it operates.
Improvement
The Company’s environmental protection goals fall within a general framework of continuous improvement.
ArcelorMittal Mines Canada therefore uses performance indicators to monitor results on an ongoing basis,
identify areas for improvement and formulate action plans to achieve – and even surpass – its goals.
Commitment
There are tremendous socioeconomic benefits for communities in welcoming a company as large as ArcelorMittal Mines Canada.
In addition to offering pay and benefits that top the national average, the Company contributes substantially to funding for social,
municipal and school services through the taxes it pays each year. But the commitment of ArcelorMittal Mines Canada extends well
beyond that: the Company contributes regularly to funding local initiatives that improve quality of life and invites employees
to invest a personal effort in community life.
Respect
In order to be respected, ArcelorMittal Mines Canada has a duty to conduct itself in a manner worthy of respect at all times.
The Company is therefore committed to demonstrating transparency, conducting its affairs in line with higher standards of governance,
stringently applying a code of ethics and business practice, and taking a “best practices” approach in all its initiatives.
It also gives stakeholders – individuals or groups that have an interest in its activities –
the opportunity to express their views and make a positive contribution to the Company’s affairs,
within a framework of mutual respect, dialogue and consideration. |
