December 2008 Ostrava, 9 December 2008 – HR Director of ArcelorMittal Ostrava, Ctirad Lolek, gave a cheque worth of 1.718 million CZK to principal of a secondary school in Ostrava – Kunčice, František Řepka. The money will be spent on support of practical education. “Even though steelmaking companies are facing tough times these days it is necessary to think about the future. For ArcelorMittal Ostrava it is crucial that the high quality training of metallurgical and engineering pupils continues” said HR Director. Pupils of three and four year programmes are trained at the secondary school in Ostrava – Kunčice. From the three year programmes the most demanded by metallurgical companies are metallurgical, tooling and fitting programmes. From the four year programmes concluded by a school leaving exam it is machine mechanic or electronics mechanic. At the moment the school registers about 1200 pupils out of which 150 pupils are being trained for the future work at ArcelorMittal Ostrava or its subsidiary ArcelorMittal Tubular Products Ostrava. The financial gift that ArcelorMittal Ostrava granted the school will be utilized for the specialized classroom and workshop equipment. “We will buy tools, appliances and material for practical training due to this money,” explains Director Řepka. For us it is important that ArcelorMittal Ostrava is our long-term partner. Their support of our school is of longtime nature, it has lasted without a break for 50 years now. That is evidently a unique thing in all the Czech Republic,” says František Řepka. However, the financial gifts are not the only way of support according to him. “Our pupils are also given scholarships by ArcelorMittal Ostrava amounting to 500 and 4.000 CZK. At present about 130 pupils of our school are receiving scholarships” specifies Director. Further amount of money pupils earn during their internship at the mill every month.
