Health & Safety Policy

Safety First

Safety and the protection of employees´ health is the company priority. In 2008, the Health and Safety Management System was examined in accordance with the OHSAS 18001 requirements by TUV Nord, an international inspection company, which awarded ArcelorMittal Ostrava the OHSAS 18001 compliance certificate. Other essential H & S initiatives have also been accomplished, e.g. review of the documents dealing with the protection against explosion and launch of the project Contractor Management in Compliace with the Requirements of the H & S System.

Last year ArcelorMittal Ostrava continued implementing an important H & S project “Consciousness Management” to improve health and safety protection at work. Minutes for Safety and behaviour-based audits have been introduced, too. The successful “Consciousness Management” project, which will continue at ArcelorMittal Ostrava through 2009 will now also include programmes focusing on the risk identification by all employees and overall improvement in safety awareness as well as improvement in the contractor safety management.

Other H & S tasks and programmes for 2009 include dealing with the issues of safe work on crane runways at the Steel Plant and Rolling Mills, the enhancement of the H & S Management System in compliance with the “Safe Company” national programme and the implementation of the newly launched H & S project named “Journey to Zero“, which is obligatory for all ArcelorMittal units.
