Food safety

In the 21st century, consumers' interests are paramount, taking precedence over those of the food producer, whose role it is to ensure a healthy supply of food. Food manufacturers face the challenge of proving that their products are completely safe for consumption. Today, some 80 percent of all our food is produced in factories using components that are processed, packaged, transported and prepared under strictly controlled conditions.

Safety has become the most important "ingredient" in our food, and we expect increasingly higher standards. A raft of legal measures is required to avoid the shortcomings of the past and to give unconditional priority to food safety.

Food safety can be defined as controlling consumer health and safety by eliminating:
•  naturally occurring or exogenous contaminants,
•  pathogens,
•  potentially toxic additives.

ArcelorMittal pledges to support can manufacturers, food producers and distributors in their efforts to meet these requirements. To address this challenge, ArcelorMittal has launched the "Food Contact" program to ensure that its packaging steel complies strictly with industry regulations and good practices.
