The kerbside collection driving the increase of the recycling rate of steel packaging in France

Immediate consequence of the spreading of the kerbside collection on the French territory, the recycling rate of steel packaging has reached a new record in 2007. The rate of 67,2% (all systems taken into account) represents an increase of 1,7% compared to 2006.

Steel recycling, a simple and efficient process to achieve performing results
Whatever the systems being used, incineration, kerbside collection, the recycling of steel for packaging results in a simple and economical process, using the magnetic extraction of steel packaging out of the houselhold wastes.

The magnetism, a unique asset for steel, added to the strong involvement of ArcelorMittal Packaging with the Local Assemblies in the recycling activities, have allowed to collect more than 4 million tons of steel for packaging over a 14 years period.

Steel, a increasingly recycled packaging material
The recycling rate of steel for packaging continues to progress in 2007 in reaching 67,2% - all systems taken into account, i.e. an increase of 1,7% compared with 2006.

The continuous development of the kerbside collection in the households in France, as well as the constant improvement of its perormances, drive to this result, which is well over the objective initially fixed by the European Union of 55% of metal recycling. With 83Kt of household steel wastes being sorted, this system has seen in 2007 a substantial increase of 5,1% compared with 2006.

The recycling of steel, a responsible gesture
The volumes of steel collected every year have a positive impact on our environment, when one knows that one tonne of sorted steel packaging allows to save 1,42 tonne of iron ore, 0,57 tonne of coal, as well as 7 months of energy consumption of one person - without forgetting the reduction of the CO2 emissions.
