Clean and quiet installations

Recycling

  • Steel is a fully recyclable product
  • ArcelorMittal plants process the greatest amount of scrap all over the world
  • We recycle 1.2 tonnes of steel per second
  • Every year 400 m tonnes of steel scrap are reused and recycled

Clean installations

ArcelorMittal Poland improves its operations in order to make the production process more environmentally friendly. This is achieved thanks to:

  • Construction of the sewage treatment plant, which cost around PLN 2 m, placed at the ore reloading base at the Unit in Dąbrowa Górnicza
  • Application of the mechanical and biological method of sewage treatment
  • Construction of the dedusting installation at the plant of the blast furnace no. 2 in Dąbrowa Górnicza, which allows significant limitation of dust emission in the teeming bay, as well as a several percentage decrease in the emission of dust pollution to the atmosphere. The cost of the installations is PLN 28 m
  • Reaching emission levels according to the Best Available Techniques (BAT)
  • Construction of the new hot strip mill in Kraków worth PLN 1,24 billion. It allowed more effective consumption of thermal energy supplied in fuel. Additionally, it also contributed to the elimination of carbon dioxide emission from the process of charge heating. Thanks to applying the new solutions it was also possible to significantly limit the individual consumption of water
  • We’ve modernized the chemical department of the coke plant in Kraków and introduced a new, waste-free technology of cleaning coke gas from hydrogen sulphide which eliminated hazardous substances from the process
  • At our coke plant in Zdzieszowice we have built hermetic and low-emission coke oven batteries no. 7, 8, 11 and 12, and shut down old batteries no. 1, 2, 9 and 10.

The company’s efforts have been noticed by the authorities of Malopolska and Silesia regions, which have taken a decision to eliminate the safety zones around the plants and granted integrated permits for equipment in use. These permits acknowledge compliance of the company’s technical solutions and equipment parameters with the standards of the Best Available Techniques.

Taking care of the natural environment is the key element of the ArcelorMittal’s strategy of sustainable development. It is regulated by the strict norms of the company’s Environmental Policy and by the guidelines of the Environmental Management System ISO 14001:2004 implemented in 2001.

Quiet plants

Application of a large number of air protection devices brings considerable environmental and economic benefits, since most of the dust can be recovered and reused in the technological process. On the other hand, it results in installation’s higher levels of energy consumption and increasing noise levels. ArcelorMittal Poland’s noise reduction programme, developed in cooperation with researchers at AGH University of Science and Technology and implemented in Kraków has been recognized by the Polish Chamber of Ecology and awarded with an Eco-laurel.

Air quality monitoring

Air parameters are monitored on a regular basis by Voivodeship Inspectorates for Environmental Protection.

Green Officer

We want to participate in the dialogue with everyone interested in ArcelorMittal Poland’s pro-ecological activities and its environmental footprint. That is why, in 2009, we introduced into our structures a position of a Green Officer.
